Exploring the contours of ‘self-representation’ in contexts of informal camaraderie, New Friends unfolds as a sequence of portraits of people Mathew Thomas met for the first time while attending an artist’s residency programme in Lahore. The project was subsequently continued at another residency in London. Each person chose the manner in which they wanted to be photographed.
