disturbia, utopia, house beautiful

Bharti Kher

On view: 20th December to 26th February, 2011

The space of the gallery which is that of an old colonial bungalow with a history that spans more than a hundred years becomes the starting point for Kher’s work. Her work for the show draws objects from the sphere of domesticity like chairs, a dressing table with a broken mirror, a glass cabinet overflowing with broken teacups, an atlas and a spinning globe in order to explore the space of disjunction the domestic occupies poised between the promise of ideal perfection of utopia and the disturbing conformism that marks suburbia.
